That reads like an ambitious season of Law & Order, but it’s really just another week — last week, in fact — on the TTC.
Toronto Police Chief Myron Demkiw said “upwards of 80” officers will be deployed to the transit system each day. Tory noted that the planned city budget will provide funds to hire an additional 50 TTC special constables, and TTC CEO Rick Leary promised to increase the number of uniformed employees and supervisors, and to enhance the surveillance camera system.
On the contrary, a 2021 review of more than a decade of enforcement data found that Black and Indigenous people were much more likely than white people to be cautioned or charged while in the transit system. At that time, TTC CEO Rick Leary said thatriding on the buses and subways due to fear of discrimination.
