In December, Hogan warned following an audit that, in addition to confirmed overpayments of $4.6 billion to individuals, additional payments of at least $27.4 billion to individuals and companies were suspicious and required further investigation. She warned a “significant” amount of public money might never be returned unless the government agencies expanded their “post-payment verification plans to include all recipients identified as being at risk of being ineligible for benefits” and recovered any amounts owed.
Commenting specifically on $15 billion in potential overpayments given out under the Canada Emergency Wage Subsidy, the CRA said that based on its experience, only a small fraction of the money would have gone to undeserving recipients and trying to recover all of it was not worth the effort.
