Feds engage in another round of politically guided consultations to provide cover for censorship legislation

on Jan. 31. The department set the consultation agenda and decided who to invite to the roundtables, asking participants a number of questions about what should be included in a law seeking to regulate online harms.Article content

Like July’s expert panel, the community roundtables called for more protections for youth, online safety education, an ombudsperson to field complaints and government support to assist victims of online harm. This feedback isn’t all that helpful, however, because we don’t know what “harm” means to these people — it went undefined — and what types of content they view as deserving of censorship.

Participants wanted government help with things like evaluating the information they see online, including offering fact-checking tools. Others suggested that the government lessen “the anonymity people have online,” and require users to verify their identities in order to post. Some were uneasy at the thought of regulating misinformation and disinformation, while others wanted disinformation to be a main focus of the legislation.

released in July consisted of a handpicked panel that broadly agreed with a censorship regime; further, these experts were paid for their input.Article content It’s also concerning that Canadian Heritage appears to be targeting specific subsets of the Canadian population when it comes to input on censorship. Most of the roundtables were arranged to gauge the opinions of certain regions, but there were also several that were themed to certain groups.Article content
