The Conservatives argue that MPs who wish to take part in Question Period or in committees should do so in person. That’s a reasonable request. Crucial elements of parliamentary democracy are debate and discussion. Zoom was an essential tool during the pandemic, but it’s not in the best interests of good government for it to continue.Article contentSure, there’s room for institutions like Parliament to evolve.
But the business of Parliament is more than just pressing a button. It’s about representing your community and advocating for it in person, in Parliament. The base annual pay for MPs is $185,000. That’s a handsome salary just to show up.
