EXPRESSED DISAPPOINTMENT. This handout picture released by the Mexican Presidency shows President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador applauding during a press conference in Mexico City on Tuesday when the president expressed disappointment the United States had not been more critical of Ecuador’s raid of his country’s embassy in Quito.
Ecuador security forces stormed the embassy on Friday night, a rare incursion on what is considered inviolable diplomatic territory, to arrest Glas, who had been granted asylum by Mexico. His comments were more critical than earlier ones from the State Department, which Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador earlier said had not been not sufficiently strong.
Glas was vice president under former leftist president Rafael Correa, who has been living in exile in Belgium since 2017 and was sentenced in absentia to eight years in prison for corruption.“There is a kidnapped person whose life is in danger, whose human rights, all due process have been violated, whose asylum has been disrespected,” Correa said of Glas.
