Professional recruiter Andrew Hanson said it is becoming increasingly difficult to attract young, skilled migrants due to an ever-intensifying global battle for talent.

Migrants on average contribute $127,000 more to federal and state budgets than the general population does their lifetimes, and generally have better employment outcomes,Skilled migrants on average make a lifetime contribution of $198,000 to the nation’s finances, compared with an $85,000 cost for the general population; primary employer-sponsored visa holders contribute as much as $557,000.

Mr Hanson, who is head of Robert Walters NSW, said these cohorts were becoming more choosy as they consider relocation – weighing up earning potential, career progression and lifestyle in reaching their decisions. That includes ramping up permanent migration visa pathways and removing barriers that hold back skilled migrants.caused by COVID-19, fewer migrants and lower fertility was “a huge challenge” ahead.“One of the most important things we can do and that we are doing is to build the kind of workforce that can support a population which is getting bigger but also getting a bit older as well,” Dr Chalmers said.

With the Albanese government currently undertaking a major review of the migration system, deputy Liberal leader Sussan Ley said any changes needed to make skilled migration “target and sustainable”.
