Following a 5.8 magnitude earthquake that struck Leyte and Southern Leyte provinces on January 23, the Department of Education (DepEd) and the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) in Eastern Visayas are conducting damage assessments on school buildings and government infrastructure. The coastal town of San Francisco in Southern Leyte was the hardest hit, with five reported injuries.
TACLOBAN CITY — The Department of Education (DepEd), and the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) in Eastern Visayas (Region 8) are conducting their own assessment of the school buildings and government infrastructures damaged by a 5.8-magnitude earthquake that shook Leyte and Southern Leyte provinces on January 23.
DepEd Region 8 Assistant Regional Director Ronelo Al Firmo told The Manila Times that the division offices of Southern Leyte and in Maasin City are conducting their assessment through the guidance of the disaster risk reduction offices. He said that class suspensions in Southern Leyte are within the discretion of the local chief executives. Meanwhile, DPWH 8 Regional Director Edgar Tabacon has directed the two DPWH district offices in Southern Leyte to conduct their immediate assessment on the damage to the earthquake. Southern Leyte Gov. Damian Mercado reported that five people were injured during the quake. Relief assistance was immediately sent to various local government units for distribution to the affected victims.
