A massive earthquake and aftershocks in February caused an estimated $5.1 billion in direct physical damage in Syria, said the World Bank on Friday.

A displaced Syrian woman living in war-damaged buildings, are pictured in Syria’s rebel-held northern city of Raqa on March 1, 2023, amid fears that the already fragile dwellings will not withstand an earthquake. – A 7.8-magnitude quake struck Syria and Turkey in early February, killing tens of thousands of people.

“The widespread damages impacted four governorates, where around 10 million of Syria’s population resides,” the report said. The most severely-hit governorate was Aleppo, with 45 percent of the estimated damages. This was followed by Idlib and Lattakia. Direct damages to residential buildings account for nearly half of the total, while infrastructure damages amounted to 18 percent of the total.
