TO ENSURE an orderly and peaceful 2022 national and local elections, President Rodrigo Duterte reminded candidates on Monday, April 18, of the Alunan doctrine that prohibits politicians from having more than two bodyguards, which can already be considered a private army.
“Let us start to behave... Ang sabi ko sa inyo, as I have done it before, pupuntahan kita and ask you why you cannot behave properly in this election? Talagang pupuntahan kita. Private army? I will arrest you and your bodyguards,” he added. These areas either have existing or past election-related incidents, intense political rivalry or are under the threat of communist rebels, which may cause chaos or be used by politicians for their advantage in the upcoming polls.
