President Rodrigo Duterte stresses the newly-signed Anti-Terrorism Act is necessary to protect the citizens from terrorist threats

President Rodrigo Duterte said citizens should not fear the newly signed Republic Act No. 11479 or the Anti-Terrorism Act of 2020, which he stressed is a"much needed' legal weapon to fight terrorism in the country.

Duterte cited the various bombings in Mindanao region perpetrated by terrorist groups, which displaced thousands of families and claimed many lives there.” Duterte said. “They think they are a different breed who would like to be treated with another set of law, when as a matter of fact they are terrorists.”

The Duterte administration faced its biggest terrorism-related attack in 2017, when local terrorist group Maute occupied the whole Marawi City for five months and initiated firefights which killed over a thousand people. The city was left in shambles after government forces defeated the ISIS-backed terrorist group in October that year and ended the siege there.
