DEPARTMENT of Social Welfare and Development Secretary Rex Gatchalian visited areas affected by the eruption of Mount Kanlaon on Tuesday, December 10, 2024.Gatchalian led the distribution of 980 family food packs worth P597,800 and reassured displaced families of the government’s continued support.
He visited La Castellana Elementary School in Barangay Robles, Negros Occidental, to assess the evacuees' conditions and ensure prompt assistance.He reiterated the administration's commitment to help those in Barangay Masulog's upper and lower Sitio Mananawin areas, Malusog in Canlaon, Negros Oriental.“Ang assurance ho ng ating Pangulo. Habang nandito kayo tutulungan at tutulungan kayo ng DSWD -- ng aming departamento kaya huwag ho kayong mag-alalala. Talagang pinapunta ako ng ating Pangulo para tignan ang inyong kalagayan,” Gatchalian said. During his visit, Gatchalian emphasized the importance of following safety protocols as residents remain temporarily displaced. “Sunod lang po tayo kay mayor kasi mapanganib pa po talagang bumalik sa mga lugar niyo. Alam kong medyo hindi komportable dito pero nandito po ang pamahalaang nasyonal at nandito din ang local government at ang provincial government. Tutulong at tutulong po kami sa inyo,” Gatchalian said. The DSWD is working closely with local government units to ensure a coordinated response to the crisis. The DSWD in Western Visayas has also deployed its Mobile Command Center to La Castellana to facilitate communication and disaster management operations. The MCC, operated by Geographic Information System specialist Daniefrance G. Trinidad and Regional Information and Communication Technology Management Section officer Alfie June Villareal, is expected to streamline the delivery of information and services to affected areas.Gatchalian was joined by DSWD Western Visayas Director Arwin Razo, Field Office VII Regional Director Shalaine Marie Lucero, Undersecretary for Disaster Response Management Group Diana Rose Cajipe, Disaster Response Management Division Chief Erlyn Garcia, and Municipal Social Welfare and Development Officer Emily Tan.The team visited several localities impacted by the volcanic activity, including Bago City, La Carlota City, Pontevedra, and La Castellana, to assess the situation and strengthen relief efforts. The eruption of Mount Kanlaon has forced hundreds of residents to evacuate, disrupting their daily lives.
