Senators on Friday revealed discovering that inmates shelled out as much as P1.5 million as part the “GCTA for sale” scheme at the New Bilibid Prison (NBP) in Muntinlupa City.

Senate President Vicente Sotto III said convicted drug lords allegedly paid as much as P1.5 million to Bureau of Corrections executives in exchange of their early release under the GCTA law or Republic Act No. 10592.

Aside from the bribe for early release, Sotto said he also learned that some inmates from the NBP’s maximum security compound also paid cash to jail officers so they would not be transferred. Traya was also mentioned in Camelon’s testimony as among those who was supposed to facilitate her husband’s early release through the GCTA.

He believes Camelon is a “very credible” and “vital” witness to the issue since Roque did not deny receiving the P50,000 from the inmate’s wife. Roque, he said, should be charged with either extortion for fooling relatives of inmates.
