Nanaimo Fire Rescue says a dump truck that tipped on its side on the Nanaimo Parkway is expected to affect traffic for several hours.

A dump truck tipped over on the Nanaimo Parkway, and fire crews are asking drivers to avoid the area.

Nanaimo Fire Rescue says the southbound lanes of Nanaimo Parkway between Northfield and East Wellington roads are expected to be closed for several hours as crews deal with a dump truck that tipped on its side. David Dales, assistant fire chief with Nanaimo Fire Rescue, says multiple people called 911 around 12:21 p.m. to report that a large truck had crashed on the Nanaimo Parkway.

“It was a large vehicle, a single patient is requiring medical care and they have been transported to the Nanaimo Regional Hospital,” Dales said in a phone interview with CHEK News. “And we will be on scene for quite a while dealing with the aftermath of this.” Dales says large trucks like this tend to be carrying quite a bit of fuel, so the crews are also working to contain a fuel spill in addition to the garbage spilled on the road.
