Driver of an older-model Volkswagen Jetta was headed south through the intersection of Mostar Road/Rutherford Road and Highway 19A about 11:20 p.m. Tuesday when she struck the pedestrian.

A pedestrian was taken to hospital Tuesday night with serious injuries after being hit by a car at the intersection of Mostar Road/Rutherford Road and Highway 19A in Nanaimo.Police said the driver of an older-model Volkswagen Jetta was headed south through the intersection in the highway’s slow lane when she struck the pedestrian.The driver remained at the scene and has co-operated with investigators.Both lanes of the highway were closed for several hours while the area was examined.

The vehicle sustained significant front-end damage and was towed, and will be undergoing a mechanical inspection. Police were unable to find any independent witnesses, and are asking anyone who saw what happened or who has dashcam footage to come forward.
