The Department of Public Works and Highways reported Tuesday the completion of a flood control structure worth P96.4 million that would benefit
communities in Alimodian town in the province of Iloilo.
DPWH Western Visayas Director Sanny Boy Oropel said the project in Barangay Bagumbayan is a 665-lineal meter revetment wall on a steel sheet foundation built to reduce the risk of flooding by diverting, storing, and releasing floodwaters in a controlled manner, especially during bad weather.By limiting the amount of water rushing downstream, he said, sedimentation and pollution in the river would be prevented, reducing the risk of river bank erosion.
Oropel said the structure would prevent the nearby Aganan Bridge from possible damage caused by raging waters, keeping the road open to the traveling public and facilitating unhampered transportation of goods and services in the area. “Most communities along the Jaro-Aganan River depend on agricultural production and animal raising. Hence, this flood mitigation structure will ensure the safety of their livelihood and enhance economic development in the locality,” he added.
