If Jonathan Huberdeau and Jacob Markstrom don’t start looking like their old selves — and don\u0027t soon — their squad might make the playoffs.
Still, nobody was expecting the usual stalwart would be allowing so many early snipes and so many softies, leaving many to wonder if he’s lost his confidence and if he deserves to lose his starting job.
This has turned out to be double trouble for the Flames. When two important players — arguably, your twoimportant players — are performing well below their lofty standard, it’s tough to overcome. It helps to explain why a deep team has been bouncing in and out of the wildcard spots in the Western Conference.
The next goal? Huberdeau specializes in making those happen, but he collected just one primary assist — and three in total — during the Flames’ five-game getaway. The Flames’ power play ranks in the bottom third of the NHL, and the 29-year-old Huberdeau has only a dozen points in man-advantage scenarios. They also have a woeful record in games that go beyond 60 minutes. He’s been on the ice for five overtime goals by the opposition — one that was scored by his team and four by the other guys, including the comeback-capper in Ottawa.
Calgary Flames goalie Jacob Markstrom is scored on by Colorado Avalanche Mikko Rantanen in first period NHL action at the Scotiabank Saddledome in Calgary on Wednesday, January 18, 2023.Markstrom’s numbers so far this season are not in the same stratosphere. His GAA has swollen to 2.93. His save percentage is a cringe-worthy .891. He has yet to blank an opponent.Article content
