TODAY'S EDITORIAL: DoTr should use homegrown transport solutions
TWO transportation systems recently presented to the Department of Transportation by the Department of Science and Technology's Metals Industry Research and Development Center offer sustainable and cost-effective solutions to the country's deficiency in public transit infrastructure, and as an added advantage, are entirely Philippine-designed and built.
' The 40-meter long vehicle, powered by a hybrid diesel-electric motor, is essentially five buses in one, capable of carrying 200 or more passengers at once at speeds up to 50 kph. Like the AGT, the HERT is also locally built from readily available parts and components, and is envisioned for use on dedicated busways such as the EDSA Carousel and other proposed bus rapid transit routes.
