“The principle of general deterrence as a measure of mitigating domestic violence … has not been proven very effective. There is little evidence that imposing heavier sentences has deterred others from committing such violence,” Van Harten said.Article content “I conclude that although the sentencing judge referred to the principles , he did not actually give effect to the court’s directive that the more important principles in domestic violence cases are deterrence and denunciation,” Harris wrote.
He admitted choking his then-girlfriend unconscious after they got into a verbal argument and she started throwing presents and Christmas ornaments at him. After she regained consciousness and the argument continued, he punched her in the face, knocking her out a second time.
