Defining the News
Department of Justice Assistant Secretary and spokesperson Mico Clavano on Saturday said the DOJ is expecting the return of suspended Negros Oriental Rep. Arnulfo “Arnie” Teves Jr. to the Philippines on the last week of July.
“It’s the furthest thing… So, I don’t see any reason why they would say that there are indicators…from the President, from the Secretary of Justice indicating that he has already been found guilty,” he added, saying it is because their case is strong. “We are very confident that the same decision would be rendered in the motion for reconsideration or the appeal would be denied in due course by the Timor-Leste judicial authorities,” DOJ Undersecretary Raul Vasquez said during a press conference.
“‘Political asylum was the first recourse that was availed of former congressman Arnie Teves. This was denied. They filed a motion for reconsideration. This was denied as well. So, to our minds, as lawyers, that is the end of the rope on that particular aspect,” the DOJ official said.
