Defining the News

In a symbolic gesture coinciding with the celebration of 126Philippine Independence Day, the Department of Justice and the Bureau of Corrections released 126 prisoners from the New Bilibid Prisons and offered free legal assistance to individuals, who are still serving time.

The event highlighted the government’s commitment to reform, emphasizing that persons deprived of liberty also deserve to be granted opportunities to rebuild their lives and be reintegrated back into society. “May you continue to let your light shine as you embrace life outside prison to serve as an inspiration for the positive transformation of others,” Remulla said in his message to the newly-released PDLs.

The free legal program was part of the broader ‘Katarungan Caravan,’ which started last June 3, 2024 in Marawi City. The initiative aims to ensure that even the most disadvantaged prisoners had access to legal support.
