MANILA, Philippines — The Department of Health (DOH) on Thursday warned the public against the unsupervised use of antibiotics, stressing the risks of self-medication as leptospirosis cases rise due to persistent flooding.

MANILA, Philippines — The Department of Health on Thursday warned the public against the unsupervised use of antibiotics, stressing the risks of self-medication as leptospirosis cases rise due to persistent flooding.“Do not take doxycycline without a doctor’s prescription,” the DOH said in an advisory. The antibiotic, commonly used to prevent leptospirosis, can lose its effectiveness if taken incorrectly, making even simple infections more difficult to treat.

Health Secretary Ted Herbosa said that the appropriate dosage of doxycycline depends on a person’s level of exposure to floodwaters, underscoring the importance of medical consultation. “If you develop symptoms such as fever, yellowing of the skin, or body weakness within a week of exposure, seek medical attention immediately,” Herbosa said.Cases of leptospirosis, a bacterial infection commonly contracted through contaminated floodwaters, have increased since December.
