BREAKING: The total number of people who have recovered from COVID-19 is now at 84, while the death toll rises to 177.
— Eleven more people have recovered from the coronavirus disease in the country as the number of cases continues to rise.
The total number of recoveries rose to 84 as of 4:00 p.m. on Tuesday, the Department of Health reported.No other details were provided on the new fatalities but previous data releases by the DOH showed some of the deaths occurred days before the information was disclosed. The same goes for the recoveries.This is relatively lower than previous daily reports as the DOH has been confirming a surge in new infections amid efforts to expand coronavirus testing.
Luzon has been placed under enhanced community quarantine, restricting people's movement, to contain the spread of the virus. Other areas outside Luzon have imposed their own lockdown policies.Worldwide, COVID-19 has killed more than 70,000 people, mostly in Italy, although the outbreak began in Wuhan, China in December 2019. More than 1.3 million people have been infected, according to the Johns Hopkins University's COVID-19 global tracker.
Eight in ten, or around 80 percent, of infected patients experience"mild illness" and eventually recover from COVID-19, according to the World Health Organization. Some 15 percent experience severe illness while 5 percent were critically ill, the WHO said. To prevent the spread of the virus, authorities are urging people to practice regular hand washing, cover their mouth and nose when coughing and sneezing, and avoid close contact with those who exhibit virus symptoms.
