The Department of Health (DOH) has encouraged the public anew to practice the 4S strategy to prevent dengue cases from increasing.
“I encourage the public to practice daily the 4S Strategy: Search and destroy, Self-protection measures, Seek early consultation when symptomatic, and Support space spraying in identified areas with clustering of cases,” said Health Secretary Francisco Duque III.
On Friday, the health department led the Regionwide Synchronized Dengue Clean-up Drive in Metro Manila, which was held in Barangay Commonwealth in Quezon City. In response to the National Dengue Epidemic, the DOH said that different local government units conducted regular community and school clean-up drives; implemented vector control measures such as the installation of ovitraps and insecticide treated screens in public elementary schools; space spraying, and “targeted outdoor residual spraying” in dengue hotspot areas.
“Furthermore, collaboration with the DOST- Philippine Council for Research and Development and the UP Manila College of Public Health have allowed the use of enhanced ovitraps which trap adult female mosquitoes. These ovitraps contain insecticide growth regulators that kill larvae and inhibit larval development,” the DOH said.
Based on the latest report of the DOH-Epidemiology Bureau, a total of 167,607 dengue cases, including 720 deaths were recorded from January 1 to July 27. A national dengue epidemic was declared last August 6.
