The Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG) on Thursday has expressed overwhelming support for the approval of the proposed “No Garage, No Car’’ bill being pushed in the Senate by Sen. Sherwin Gatchalian.
The bill compels vehicle buyers to present papers proving that they have available parking spaces for their vehicles.
DILG Undersecretary and spokesman Jonathan Malaya said the agency would urge Congress to pass a law that will prohibit the selling of cars to those who do not have a parking area.Malaya said illegally-parked vehicles have contributed and have been a bane in the worsening traffic situation in Metro Manila.
In a recent meeting with mayors, Malaya cited the importance of having a “No Garage, No Car’’ policy, citing that over a million car owners have no lawful parking spaces.Gatchalian, the author of Proof of Parking Space Act, Senate Bill No. 201 which was filed in January during the 17th Congress, has re-filed the measure in the 18th Congress.
