FILIPINOS affected by the massive wildfire in Maui, Hawaii will be given assistance, assured the Department of Foreign Affairs on Tuesday, August 15, 2023.

In a television interview, DFA Undersecretary Eduardo de Vega said the Philippine Consulate General in Honolulu is already conducting a consular mission to locate around 50 Filipino teachers, under J-1 visa, who were reportedly in Maui. “They are in Maui and our consulate is locating them because we want to make sure that they’re not in Lahaina -- the affected town. In the record, they are not in Lahaina, but they are in Maui. They may have been affected. They may have been on tourist purposes on the area,” he said.

He said the teachers will also be assisted should they request for repatriation but he noted that in most cases, they do not ask for assistance for their return in the country instead they seek help for them to find new jobs. De Vega said the DFA already authorized the Hawaii consular office to provide financial assistance to the wildfire-affected Filipinos. The death toll in Hawaii’s wildfire has increased to 99 as of August 14 based on data from the State’s Governor.SunStar website welcomes friendly debate, but comments posted on this site do not necessarily reflect the views of the SunStar management and its affiliates.
