The police sergeant was able to rescue his teenage son but was dragged out to sea near Narooma on the NSW south coast.
An off-duty police sergeant from Sydney drowned after rescuing his teenage son from a rip on an unpatrolled South Coast beach on New Year’s Day.Paramedics were called to Bogola Beach, near Narooma, just after 1.30pm on Monday and performed CPR on the man, but he could not be saved.
“This is a tragedy that will cut through his family, his friends, his workmates. It’s devastating. As a father, a parent and as a police officer, he’s obviously doing what he should be doing.”Bogola Beach was not patrolled by surf lifesavers but they responded quickly to the call. A helicopter sent from nearby Moruya spotted the man in the water and surf life savers pulled him from the rip, but he could not be revived.
