Detained suspects in the March 4, 2023 killings of Negros Oriental Gov. Roel R. Degamo and nine other persons asked the Manila RTC for their continued detention at the NBI, DOJ Secretary Jesus Crispin C. Remulla said. ManilaBulletin
“They are now asking that they be detained there instead of the commitment order to Manila City Jail,” Remulla said during a press conference Wednesday, May 31.Senior Deputy State Prosecutors Richard Anthony D. Fadullon had earlier confirmed that the arraignment of the suspects by the trial court had been postponed “because of pending incidents,” the details he did not disclose.
He suspects that the recantations happened after Miranda got in contact with former DOJ Undersecretary Reynante Orceo who is now Miranda’s legal counsel. “We are not claiming anything but what we think is that these stories are being made by spin masters, spin doctors that they have employed,” he said.
Regardless, Remulla said the petition was filed too late since Rivero’s family already voluntarily left the DOJ’s Witness Protection Program .
