The Philippines has all the key elements for expanding its wings in the global electronics industry, so what is holding it back?

Citing global data, Gojar noted that the semiconductor industry is facing a shortage of over one million skilled professionals worldwide. She emphasized that this presents a valuable opportunity for the Philippines to step in and address the talent gap. She also pointed out that even Taiwan—already a global leader in semiconductors—experienced a shortage of around 25,000 engineers in 2023.

“There’s really a big market locally and globally. And I can see there is signings with us and the other academic institutions around. And we have the expertise. And for now, I can feel that maybe government is also helping us. So that’s how I look at this issue,” Dr. Teresita Fortuna, President of Colegio de Muntinlupa, said during the panel discussions. However, the country still trails behind key regional players, particularly Vietnam and Thailand, Gojar said.

Gojar also noted that the Philippines’s share in assembly, testing, and packaging has been contracting in recent years. She clarified that, while these nations should not be underestimated, they are not recognized for their technological advancements, highlighting the potential loss for the Philippines. “It’s a shame. We need to be known for more than just bangles, furniture, and coconut oil,” she added.Gojar stressed the need for increased government support, pointing out that although President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. has named semiconductors a priority sector, there is little evidence of meaningful action.

“With stronger government support and better alignment of resources, the country could attract more investors. I could easily double, even triple or quadruple, our current number of 400 engineers if support systems are in place,” she added. As of this writing, the firm has partnered with 17 universities across the country—six in Luzon, four in the Visayas, and seven in Mindanao.
