Belarus has warned of “catastrophic consequences for everyone” after a stray missile fell into its territory, sparking further fears Russia is paving the way for its closest ally to join the floundering campaign in Ukraine.
A spokesman for the Belarusian foreign ministry, Anatoly Glaz, warned the move could lead to “catastrophic consequences for everyone”.In response, Ukraine’s defence ministry released a statement which accused Russia of using the incident in an attempt to involve Belarus in the war.
“In this regard, the Ukrainian side does not rule out a deliberate provocation by the terrorist state of Russia, which laid such a route for its cruise missiles to provoke their interception in the airspace over the territory of Belarus,” the defence ministry said. Fears have been mounting for months amongst Ukrainian military brass over Belarus’ potential entry into the war.
The two countries have also taken part in several military exercises in recent weeks, with Russian troops amassing in Belarus for “intensive combat training” in early December.
