THE Department of Education was set to implement an infrastructure project funded by the World Bank meant to improve the resilience of schools damaged by natural calamities.Dubbed Safer and Resilient Schools, the P30.56 billion project was approved by the National Economic and Development Authority after it was presented to President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. on May 15.The DepEd and the Department of Public Works and Highways were tasked as lead agencies in the implementation of the project.

The endeavor, which will be rolled out in the next five years, involves the repair and refurbishment of 4,756 buildings, 13,101 classrooms in 1,282 schools affected by disasters from 2019 to 2023.Meanwhile, Deputy Minority Leader and Bagong Henerasyon Party-list Rep. Bernadette Herrera-Dy urged the DepEd to consider climate-adaptive designs in all school buildings.
