The Philippine Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) has launched a fundraising campaign to save six iconic species on the brink of extinction. The campaign aims to raise P100 million to fund breeding programs and other initiatives.
The Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) has launched the Save from Extinction fundraising campaign to repopulate six species that are iconic of Philippine heritage but now are on the brink of extinction: the Philippine eagle, pawikan, tamaraw, cockatoo, dugong and the Philippine pangolin. It has already raised P100 million and seeks to generate the same amount from the public over the next few years to start initiatives like breeding programs.
One way that individuals and organizations can help is by purchasing t-shirts and tote bags featuring the six species from DENR's partner SM retail brand Kultura. Another is through donation boxes in the Save From Extinction kiosks or deposits through Banco de Oro (BDO) ATMs, online banking and over-the-counter in BDO branches nationwide. Though Save from Extinction special Kultura kiosks highlighting the items as potential Christmas gifts were placed in certain SM supermalls from the Dec. 12 launch to the end of the year, the merchandise will remain available at select Kultura branches for the foreseeable future. As DENR Secretary Maria Antonia Yulo-Loyzaga acknowledged during the launch, their work is just beginning, as the initial P100 million that the agency put together 'is not enough to get the job done.' According to the 75-year-old global organization International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN), each of the species has a threshold number indicating that their population is coming back from endangerment status. Yulo-Loyzaga continued that she would like to 'surpass if we can' the thresholds set by the IUCN, which is driven by the mission to safeguard the environment and its ecosystems. 'I'd be dreaming if I say that these can be achieved in the next few years, but at least we put the foundation in place: breeding programs that can increase the population and keep away from extinction
