The Department of Justice (DOJ) has dropped 98 criminal cases related to the Dengvaxia vaccine controversy, citing a lack of evidence linking the vaccine to child deaths. Former Health Secretary Janette Garin, who was implicated in the case, welcomed the decision and urged for greater transparency regarding the Public Attorney's Office's (PAO) handling of the matter.

ILOILO CITY — Former health secretary Janette Garin , who was embroiled in the Dengvaxia vaccine controversy, hailed the Department of Justice's ( DOJ ) decision to withdraw 98 criminal case s related to the vaccination, stating that it 'reaffirms truth and justice in public health .' 'This decision is a victory for truth, justice, and science,' Garin said in a statement.

'It affirms that public health decisions based on sound evidence and expert guidance cannot be tainted by baseless accusations,' she added.Garin, who currently serves as the representative of the first district of Iloilo, emphasized that the DOJ's dismissal of charges against her, Dr. Gerardo Bayugo, and Dr. Ma Joyce Ducusin demonstrated that 'justice has prevailed.' The Justice Department, on January 27, dropped all reckless imprudence resulting in homicide charges, citing a lack of a prima facie case with reasonable certainty of conviction against the three former Department of Health (DOH) officials. In its decision, the DOJ asserted that no malicious intent was detected in the officials' actions and that no causal link could be established between the vaccine and the reported deaths of children. It also emphasized that a substantial timeframe elapsed between vaccination and the reported incidents. The DOJ further highlighted that the vaccine was procured through a rigorous bidding process and that a Certificate of Product Registration had been issued by the Food and Drug Administration. 'It's only in the Philippines that Dengvaxia has been ridiculously accused of 'causing death,' Garin stressed. 'Globally, it has been recognized as a safe and effective vaccine that prevents severe dengue and saves lives,' she added. The lawmaker also expressed concern over the persistent delays in case resolution from the Public Attorney's Office (PAO). 'The case buildup should have been completed long ago, but instead, it is still being prolonged unnecessarily. The PAO continues to delay case resolution, consuming taxpayer money with no accountability,' she stated.Garin further demanded transparency regarding the funds spent by the PAO on the Dengvaxia cases, arguing that public health had been politicized. The PAO recently filed a 68-page motion for reconsideration, contending that the deaths of 170 children 'speak for themselves' and urging the case be reopened
