Christianity is declining in Australia, while a rise in families from multicultural backgrounds is helping shape the traditional December 25 celebration.

As millions of Australians sit down for ham or seafood at Christmas celebrations this year, fast food giant KFC will once again be at the heart of an unusual festive tradition.

A 2021 survey found about three in 10 Australians said they would go to church at Christmas if invited by a family member or friend.The shift in religious belief comes as the country’s population has doubled in size in the past 50 years. India has moved past China and New Zealand to become a top three country of birth for Australian residents, behind England.

“There might be some who say the move away from religious celebrations is a worrying thing. I’m not worried at all because over time we change the way we see things, and we’ve changed to become a more encompassing nation celebrating together.”
