OSAKA — In my previous column, I discussed the revelation that Indonesia's latest economic data indicated that the country has entered a mild state of deflation rather than the widely feared inflation seen elsewhere.

OSAKA — In my previous column, I discussed the revelation that Indonesia's latest economic data indicated that the country has entered a mild state of deflation rather than the widely feared inflation seen elsewhere. I wrote then, as I write now, with malice toward none, but concern for all, as Indonesia is the largest economy in this corner of the world, and its socioeconomic well-being thus concerns us all.

While this doesn't mean they would completely lose their drive for growth, they would lack the strong motivation to expand aggressively, making it difficult for the overall economy to push forward. If, instead, there is persistent deflation, businesses will see their product prices continuously falling. This can dampen their enthusiasm — some may downsize their operations, while others might even decide to shut down entirely.
