SEVERAL groups on Thursday, August 17, urged the government to declare a public health emergency in Batangas and investigate health impacts of liquefied natural gas (LNG) on residents of Batangas City.

Medical and legal practitioners and residents from affected communities and concerned organizations gathered on Thursday to launch a campaign callling on the Department of Health to declare such health emergency.The campaign was led by the Philippine Movement for Climate Justice in partnership with the Asian Peoples' Movement on Debt and Development.'The people affected are not just ordinary statistics. They are our family and fellow countrymen.

From 2021, more than 4,000 residents of Batangas supposedly suffered from respiratory infections and cardiovascular diseases caused by toxic air from fossil gas plants near the city.Currently, the Philippines has six LNG power plants and five of them are in Batangas.The five communities that host these facilities are Ilijan, Malitam, Sta. Rita Karsada, Tabangao Ambulong and Tabangao Aplaya.
