More likely, though, you could point to that day in October 1985 when his then 21-year-old daughter, Lindsay, totalled the family car, a five-year-old beige Dodge St. Regis that Kempffer described as “a comfortable car that was fond of gas stations.” Kempffer subsequently decided not to get a new car.
Kempffer’s ability to do pretty much everything by bicycle led him to let his driver’s license expire when he turned 80, explaining that if he absolutelyto drive a car, to a hospital for some such emergency, for example, he could probably convince any police officer who stopped him of the direness of the situation.
Additionally, there are his twice-daily bike rides simply for pleasure and exercise, currently on hiatus.
