MAMAMAYANG Liberal Party-list representative-elect Leila de Lima said she would file a bill criminalizing red-tagging by the government, particularly when used against members of the media.
'Red-tagging is a threat to truth. In Congress, I will fight to criminalize it. Press freedom is nonnegotiable,' de Lima said. De Lima was responding to a Reporters Without Borders statement, urging newly elected lawmakers to create laws addressing systemic problems affecting Philippine journalism. 'Since taking office in 2022, President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.'s administration has failed to effectively address the systemic threats that journalists face.
The new Congress term is a crucial opportunity to initiate the badly needed reforms. RSF calls on newly elected legislators to rise above partisan divides and work together to rebuild a safe and free environment for journalism in the Philippines,' Cedric Alvani, director of RSF Asia-Pacific Bureau, said. Kamanggagawa Party-list representative-elect Eli San Fernando said he welcomed the recommendations of RSF.
