The week-long demonstration from April 12 to 19 was aimed to address the growing concern of marine debris in the waters off Kota Kinabalu.

KKCH Deputy Director-General Robert Lipon, who observed the last day of the demonstration which was for the dry season, said another round of testing would take place during the monsoon season in June this year. “The demonstration aimed to examine the most suitable type and specification of waste collection vessels for the waters off Kota Kinabalu.

The collaboration between KKCH, Kure Daiya and Nippon Koei to collect the debris are a positive step towards reducing the negative impacts on marine ecosystem and people’s welfare in Kota Kinabalu. Kure Daiya project was part of a one-year contract signed with the Japan International Cooperation Agency in December 2022.
