KOTA KINABALU: Ever since Siti’s (not her real name) parents died when she was 14, she had trouble adjusting to adolescence and growing up.
Despite having other siblings, the seventh of 10 siblings found solace and joy in her friends and when she was around 19, she first learnt to do drugs with them.
“She left me alone and I was arrested. Now, I have learnt my lesson. I will be selective and careful when befriending or trusting anyone,” she said. He has been in and out of prison a few times for taking drugs, and this round, he is set on not going down that path again. “I just want to prove to my mother how sorry I am. I want to change and I pray that this is the final time I fall,” he said.
Earlier, Sabah Prisons Department deputy director Mohammad Sa’ad Bantalani said the early release and parole programme help reduce congestion in the prison cells and also encouraged better recovery of inmates in society. She said having them integrate with the outside community actually does a lot of good as compared to trying to change them within the prison walls.
