A Canadian Armed Forces member help clears a felled tree in Catalone. IAN NATHANSON/CAPE BRETON POSTMore than a week has passed since our area was struck with the devastation wrought by post-tropical storm Fiona. Fortunately, notwithstanding the extensive property losses and numerous and dangerous instances of naturally occurring violent mayhem, there was, save for one elderly man on the mainland, no loss or life or serious injury. For this we may count our blessings and be grateful.

This group includes hospital workers, personnel in homes for the aged, home-care workers who get out in all weathers giving care and comfort to many who would otherwise have none, those who with power saws in hand cleared and continue to clear obstructions and other dangers, fire, police and emergency public servants, volunteers who assisted their neighbours, providing such assurances as were necessary to let people know that they were not alone and all would be well.

Amidst the turmoil, there was also, albeit not intentionally, a certain element of humor. Noteworthy in this regard were the traffic jamming line-ups at various coffee shop locations. I was reminded of accounts during the London Blitz when, despite the wailing of air-raid sirens, there were lines stretching around city blocks lining up for bird seed.
