Davao Oriental Governor and former Rep. Corazon Malanyaon died on Wednesday at 73 years old, the provincial government confirmed.
Citing information from the governor's daughter, Vice Governor Niño Uy said Malanyaon passed away at around 3:50 p.m.
He made the announcement in a live broadcast on the local government's Facebook page in the evening, but did not specify the cause of death. From 2001 to 2007, Malanyaon served as the congressional representative of Davao Oriental’s first district. She was elected as provincial governor in 2007 and held the post until 2016, the same year she returned to the House of Representatives for another term that ended in 2022.The Cateel town native began her political career when she was appointed officer-in-charge councilor of Davao City after the 1986 People Power Revolution. She was then elected as councilor in subsequent polls and eventually became the city’s vice mayor.
