MEMBERS of the Daulah Islamiyah-Maute Group who were targeted by the recent military operations in Lanao del Sur are planning to “create havoc” amid the election period and for the upcoming observance of Ramadan, a military official said on Thursday, March 3, 2022.
Brigadier General Jose Maria Cuerpo II, commander of the 103rd Infantry Brigade, said the group led by Abu Zacariah, the new alleged emir of ISIS in Southeast Asia, was monitored to have relocated from the west side to the east side of Lake Lanao. “They perpetrated a number of bomb attacks in cellular sites here in Lanao in the latter part of 2021 and early this year. We received a report that the remaining members of Daulah Islamiyah-Maute Group in Lanao provinces and Daulah Islamiyah-Hassan Group from Maguindanao are reorganizing in the target area, hence the conduct of close air support followed by the combat operations,” Cuerpo said.
Cuerpo said the number of rebels killed increased to seven, while one soldier died amid the conduct of a follow-up combat operation in the area. Five soldiers were wounded during the gunfight, but they are already in stable conditions. Around 45 pieces of various firearms and 20 improvised explosive devices were recovered in the clash site.“Your armed forces here in Lanao del Sur continue to intensify our operations to eliminate the threats and reach our ultimate goal of achieving lasting peace and progress for the people of Mindanao. Our operations are very specific and very surgical,” said Cuerpo.
