DASMARINAS City relied on its one-two punch of International Masters Daniel Quizon and Michael Concio Jr. as it ripped General Santos City in the finals to rule the First Masskara National Team Inter-Provinces, Cities and Municipalities Championships recently in Bacolod City.
Quizon swept Ellan Asuela, 2-0, on the top board, while Concio downed IM Joel Pimentel, 1.5-.5, on the second board to power the squad from Cavite to a two-game finals sweep to bag the top purse of P100,000. Completing the Dasmarinas triumph were Mark Jay Bacojo’s 1-1 split with Eric Labog Jr. on Board 3 and Christian Gian Karlo Arca’s 2-0 rout of Sherwin Tiu on Board 4.
Muntinlupa City A’s FIDE Masters Nelson Mariano III and Arden Reyes, Leonard Reyes and Chester Neil Reyes needed a deciding third game to edge Bacolod City B’s David Elorta, Grandmaster Darwin Laylo, Brylle Arellano and Jerry Areque to claim third spot. Dasmarinas made it through despite finishing just third out of the four teams that made the semifinals. Quizon and Concio turned things around as the World Cup veterans trounced Muntinlupa Am, 2-0, in the semifinals before romping off with a shutout win over General Santos in the finale.
