Victoria shirking host duties for the 2026 Commonwealth Games has been labelled a 'significant factor' in a Canadian province's decision to withdraw from the bidding process for the 2030 event.
Alberta was considering a joint bid for the 2030 edition of the Games, with events to be held in provincial capital Edmonton and nearby Calgary, the largest city.
Mr Schow blamed the Games’ corporate sponsorship model and limited broadcast revenues for the decision, as the costs and risks shifted largely to the taxpayer as a result. "In the case of the 2030 Commonwealth Games, the numbers just didn't add up for our government to commit taxpayer's money with the games estimated to cost $2.68 billion."Commonwealth Sport Canada – the local arm of the event’s governing body – cited Victoria’s decision to scrap hosting the 2026 Games as a major factor in the decision.
