Victoria's Deputy Premier has been grilled on the government's decision to oppose a parliamentary inquiry into its cancelled Commonwealth Games.

Labor members in the Legislative Council on Wednesday voted against an opposition motion to establish a select committee to probe the decisions surrounding the games.

"The debate was held yesterday in the Legislative Council and the government put its position on the record… in terms of its view around the auditor-general being best placed to undertake this work," the Deputy Premier said. Ms Allan, who had served as Commonwealth Games delivery minister, said the government had been"very clear" with residents about why it could no longer hold the event.

"Particularly when that cost was more than double the estimated economic benefit that the games may have bought to the state.
