While the phrase “organic and genuine approach” is often bandied about by music groups, it’s pretty much the cornerstone for the Austin, Texas-based rock band Culture Wars.
the day before Culture Wars kicked off their set for LANY’s “A Beautiful Blur” tour Manila and Cebu, the band led by vocalist Alex Dugan, talked about their commitment to authenticity.
Culture Wars—comprising Dugan, David Grayson, Josh Stirm, Dillion Randolph, and Caleb Contreras—initially garnered a following through word-of-mouth and their dynamic live performances. Tracks like “Faith” and “Lose Money” skyrocketed on streaming platforms, helping to expand the band’s audience. Their single “Leave Me Alone,” featured on the GRAMMY-nominatedsoundtrack, received a significant boost from major influencers, marking Culture Wars’ first entry into the Top 30 Alternative Rock hits.

It’s undeniable that some of Culture Wars’ music videos and sounds evoke a sense of nostalgia. Their use of synthesizers—which were widely used in music during the 1980s and 1990s, a period that many listeners may fondly remember—brings to mind a sound reminiscent of LANY. The band acknowledged this connection, describing it as a “weird way” of crossover that works for them. They believe it complements their style well.
With their commitment to authenticity and a solid foundation, Culture Wars is reaping the rewards of their approach. Following the conclusion of the LANY tour and their successful shows worldwide, the band announced that they will be gradually releasing tracks from their upcoming debut album. Their recent single, “Miley,” is part of this rollout.
