TAIPEI, TAIWAN— The non-profit organization Circular Taiwan Network (CTN) advocating for a circular economy in this country asserts that the challenge in the global economy is not green energy itself, but the necessity to “redesign the economic model to make it more sustainable.

Charles Huang, Founder and Chairman of Circular Taiwan Network, spoke to international media the day after launching the “Go Green with Taiwan” campaign on June 19, 2024.

Huang highlighted that “green,” while important, are only characteristics and not comprehensive solutions. The focus should shift from simply buying and selling green products to fundamentally redesigning the economic model. This shift involves moving away from privatizing benefits and externalizing costs towards a more neutral and inclusive approach.

Recently, on June 19, 2024, Taiwan’s foreign trade officials initiated the “Go Green with Taiwan” campaign, encouraging international companies to address escalating climate change concerns by embracing the increasing demand for green energy with the use of sustainable products, aiming to foster a sustainable future.Huang cited Taiwan’s innovative use of pineapple by-products in the circular economy. Notably, Taiwan produced approximately 382,300 metric tons of pineapples in 2022.

With 4.4 billion people residing in urban areas worldwide, local policymakers are increasingly recognized for their pivotal role. “In the future, the circular economy will promote ‘product as a service’—focusing on providing services rather than ownership,” Huang said.
