On the eve of the 121st Philippine Independence Day celebration last week, a group of Filipino students from the College of Saint Benilde of the De La Salle University (CSB-DLSU) literally captured the imagination of the artistic world when it ran away with one of the major prizes in the 14th Prague Quadrennial of Performance Design and Space in the Czech Republic.
The CSB group won the top prize in the Imagination Category under the Student Exhibition of the competition with their entry, “Passing Through: Lines and Borders”, a powerful presentation tackling one of the most controversial issues currently gripping many countries and continents around the world, including in Europe and the United States – the issue of migration.
Through the use of sight and sound, the CSB entry simulates the visa interview process Filipinos undergo when seeking entrance into a number of developed countries. It is an experience that one of the artists underwent and is replicated in some other countries whose citizens seek to cross borders into more affluent, developed nations.
Filipinos of varying ages answer the seemingly-endless set of questions, often struggling with their replies. Apparently, Cruz had the chance of experiencing such an incident when she was applying for her visa to study in London to take her master’s degree.
