The Crown is seeking a conditional sentence of 60 to 90 days for RNC officer Noelle Laite, to be followed by probation for a period of 12 months. Her attorney is seeking a suspended sentence with probation for a period of 18 to 24 months.

Laite had originally been charged with four offences and Judge Wayne Gorman found her guilty of two of them — assault and assault causing bodily harm. The other two charges — assault with a weapon and choking the woman — were dismissed. Crown attorney Kathleen O’Reilly suggested Laite be given a conditional sentence of 60 to 90 days, to be followed by probation for a period of 12 months.
In her victim impact statement, Laite’s ex-partner said it has been difficult to move on and she now sees that what she endured wasn’t normal and was not OK. If Gorman found that a time of incarceration was warranted, Ash suggested he impose a conditional sentence of 30 to 60 days. A conditional sentence, or house arrest, would allow Laite to serve the time in the community and enable her to pursue a work opportunity.
