The Department of Environment and Natural Resources has called for public support to protect the nesting site of a critically endangered leatherback turtle in the coastal town of Sta. Ana in Cagayan province.According to a DENR statement, a female leatherback turtle recently laid eggs along the shoreline of Brgy. Centro in the said town, before returning to the sea. The said turtle’s carapace measured 200 centimeters long and 100 centimeters wide.
It can be recalled that during her visit to Sta. Ana in February this year, the DENR chief announced that a marine scientific research station will be established in the town where the Palaui Island Protected Landscape and Seascape is located. The said facility will strengthen the monitoring and protection of coastal and marine resources, including sea turtles.
Leatherback turtles are classified as critically endangered under the Red List of Threatened Species by the International Union for the Conservation of Nature. The Philippines is home to five marine turtle species, with leatherback turtles as the largest. Adults typically weigh between 320 and 600 kilograms and lay around 60 to 120 eggs.
Additionally, the department is notifying establishments and resorts adjacent to the nesting site to raise awareness and secure their cooperation in conservation efforts.
